Roland were always pioneers of the rhythm box. They were always pushing the boundaries of what a drum machine should be. It was the TR808, however, that made people sit up and listen. For the first time, here was totally programmable drum machine that allowed you to make your own rhythms almost without restriction.
A unique feature was it's analog inputs, capable of accepting guitar, mic and line level signal. The AD inputs also were an option when making wave sequences, incorporating the input signal into the synthesis engine in real time. More sample sounds here.
The Kurzweil K2000 is a programmable synthesizer by Kurzweil Music Systems. The K2000 features a technology dubbed V.A.S.T. it's variable in that the user can choose different signal paths, which contain different DSP functions, for use in shaping a sound. This instrument have been used by Pink Floyd, Duran Duran, Massive Attack and Vangelis

You can pretty much program anything on a K2000. Even if you don't have the sampling option installed, you can still load samples if you want to go that route. Kurzweil seem to be specialized in phat sounds, when you hear them you will fall over and cry out of joy, without question the Kurzweil is by far superior.
